Fire at Córdoba’s Mosque-Cathedral Quickly Contained
CÓRDOBA, Spain – A fire broke out at the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba on Friday night, reportedly caused by a short circuit in an electric floor-sweeping machine. The blaze began shortly after 9 p.m. in the Chapel of Almanzor and was under control within 90 minutes, according to police and the Cabildo, which manages the monument. Firefighters worked through the night to ensure the site’s safety. The Emeritus Bishop of Córdoba, Demetrio Fernández, confirmed the suspected cause and thanked emergency crews for their swift response. Surrounded by wood, the location allowed the flames to spread quickly, threatening one of Spain’s most important examples of Islamic and Andalusian architecture. The historic site will open as normal on Saturday.
