Spain Receives Historic International Aid Against Wildfires

MADRID – Spain is facing 40 active wildfires, 23 considered “especially concerning,” mainly in Ourense, León, Zamora, and Cáceres. Fires have already burned 138,000 hectares, with EU Copernicus estimates suggesting as many as 300,000 hectares destroyed in August alone. Four people have died, including a firefighter and two volunteers in León, and a man in Madrid. Spain will now receive “the largest international aid contingent in history” under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. A Black Hawk helicopter from Slovakia has arrived in Cáceres, while a Czech aircraft will assist operations in Castilla y León and Galicia.
